My rabbit hobby started back in 1995 at the age of 10, in upstate New York. I had a pet rabbit that passed away and my mother suggested that we look for someone in 4-H who had rabbits. She came across a local breeder in NY who raised polish and dutch. We went to her rabbitry, planning on getting just one baby for a pet, but when we got to the breeders house she told me that she would only sell me a rabbit if I agreed to join her 4-H rabbit club and show it in the county fair. I agreed and ended up going home with a tortoiseshell dutch doe and a blue polish doe. From there I quickly became strongly involved in the rabbit 4-H club and soon joined ARBA and started showing at local all breed shows.
At first I dabbled in a few different breeds, including Mini Rex, Harlequins, Polish, Dutch, Holland Lops, Netherland Dwarfs, and French Angoras, but polish were my real passion, so I decided to focus solely on them. I chose to show in open against the adults because I knew that if I competed against them I would be more successful and taken more seriously. It took me a few years to figure out what I was doing, but once I figured out how to piece rabbits together, I soon became the top polish breeder in NY and the Northeast.

In 2000 I attended my first national convention in Columbus, OH. I entered rabbits in both open and youth. I met some really amazing people and was able to pick up some very nice stock from other breeders around the country and even managed to win the broken sr. doe class in open. From then on I have attended the majority of national conventions.
In 2002, I started the Northeastern Polish Rabbit Club where I served as president for two years.
In 2003 I got my registrars license, graduated high school and moved to Tucson, Arizona to attend school. Once I started going to shows in Arizona, I quickly started up the Arizona Polish Rabbit Club, where I also served as president for a year. I also soon noticed Joy Bramhall’s and Jeremy Collin’s beautiful netherland dwarfs and decided to buy a trio of siamese sables from Joy. After breeding them and showing them for a year, Jeremy and I decided to start showing our dwarfs together.
Then in 2005 Jeremy sold out of rabbits and I decided to buy the majority of his herd and sell my polish. Later that year I moved my rabbits into Joy Bramhall’s rabbitry, where she was gracious enough to help me produce better dwarfs.
Since then Joy has sadly sold out of rabbits and moved to Prescott, AZ and was nice enough to rent her beautiful house and rabbitry to me. I’m currently in my senior year at the University of Arizona and work full time as a server at the Olive Garden. This past October I took my judges test at the national convention in Michigan and I am pleased to say I passed. I am also president of the Southern Arizona Rabbit Breeders Association, and Vice President of the Arizona Netherland Dwarf Club. I do not get to attend many shows due to my work and school schedule, but I hope to make it to a few more now that I have to work under judges to receive my license.

See you at the shows!

I have raised rabbits for the past 25 years, starting when my children were in 4-H. Not wanting to be an overzealous parent, I got my own breed, Holland Lops, and have been very successful in the raising and showing of them.  Although my family enjoyed raising several different breeds, I have remained dedicated to the Holland Lop.  have been active in the Holland Lop Rabbit Specialty Club where I have served as vice-President, Secretary and Director.  I am currently Chairman of the HLRSC Standards Committee.  As an avid breeder and exhibitor, I have attended the last 21 ARBA Conventions.  I have also served as Chairman for five HLRSC National Shows. I received my Rabbit Judges License in May of 1992 and have enjoyed the camaraderie and traveling that judging brings, as well as the chance to educate and help other exhibitors.  I have had the honor of judging at the all but one of the last 14 ARBA Conventions as well as the honor to pick Best in Show at the Portland ARBA Convention and Best in Show Youth at the San Diego ARBA Convention.. I believe that you should always give back to any organization that you belong to, hence my involvement on the local and national level.  I served as ARBA District 2 Director for four years.  I did not seek re-election for a third term, as I was Co-Chair for the 2001 ARBA Convention with Randy Shumaker and Kevin Whaley.  What a convention it was!   We are planning to bring the ARBA Convention back to San Diego in 2009.  On a local level, I founded the Nor Cal Holland Lop Club where I have been either President or Secretary-Treasurer for the past 16 years. My advice to new breeders, is to enjoy the process along the way.  The rabbits really do come and go, but the friendships that you make will last a lifetime!

We received our first family rabbit when I was 10 years old.  She was a Chinchilla-colored, commercial-type doe, whose family went off to our nation’s capital when their father was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.  She had been bred before and was very maternal toward my little family of cavies.

When I returned from living abroad in 1983, my friends who couldn’t take their Dutch/Dwarf-sibling rabbits to their new apartment, offered them to me.  I rescued the pair and not knowing any better, kept them together, as I did the cavies.  Inevitably, many times over, litters were born and the pet stores would give me a few bucks for the babies.   There, I noticed these unusual-looking Mini Lop bunnies that commanded a higher price than the others.

One day in 1986 on the feed store bulletin board, I saw a card of a breeder of “pedigreed Mini Lops” who was also an ARBA member.  From my background in dog fancy, I was interested in learning about purebred rabbits.  I purchased my first doe from her and was introduced to the Hawaii All-Breed Rabbit Club.  I became active in the club and have come a ways from the days of selling inbred, mutt bunnies to pet stores.  I have raised the following breeds: New Zealand, English Angora, Holland Lop and Florida White.  Presently I have Black & Blue varieties of Rex, Sandy Flemish Giant, and Champagne d’Argent. Since the founding year of the club, I have served in every office except that of Treasurer.  Our club supports ARBA’s Three F’s of rabbit raising and holds public displays a few times a year.

As frequently as possible, I travel to national conventions to purchase breeding stock and to convince judges to travel halfway across the Pacific Ocean and judge a show and register rabbits for us.  Our shows are small (usually less than 100 animals) and their frequency depends on the chance that a judge may happen our way on vacation. For 22 years, The Hawaii All-Breed Rabbit Club is proud to represent ARBA at the extreme southwestern end of the U.S.

Raised with animals from infancy, I have found them essential for my own well being.  They also serve in teaching children unselfishness, responsibility, the facts of life & emotional attachment & detachment.  As a high school special education teacher, I take rabbits and other animals into the classroom to practice Animal-Assisted Therapy.  It is gratifying to witness the small miracles that unfold daily in the way of improved behavior, due to the presence of the animals, among the most discouraged portion of the student population.

As one of my hobbies is cooking, I enjoy raising commercial-type breeds.  Encouraged by Oren Reynolds and Glen Carr, I began writing the recipe column, “The Creative Cook” in 2002 for the “Domestic Rabbits” magazine, with the purpose of promoting healthy eating with an international twist.

I am grateful to all ARBA staff & members who have helped me along the way.  It is my pleasure and privilege to serve the State of Hawaii as its representative to District 2.
