Oklahoma D4 Members Win Big in Tulsa

Jessica Showalter and Sherry Hines win Best in Show with their beautiful Dutch

Sherry Hines and Jessica Showalter both took the highest award in their respective shows at this year's Tulsa State Fair.

Sherry Hines won Best of Breed and Best Opposite Sex in both Polish and Dutch in the Open Division at the Tulsa State Fair show on Saturday, October 8, 2011 and went on to take Best in Show with a Junior Black Dutch Buck.

Jessica Showalter's Senior Blue Dutch doe was deemed Best of Breed in the Youth Division and too was chosen to receive the Best in Show honors.

Both Showalter and Hines fared well the following day at the All Breed Youth and Open shows hosted by the Tulsa Rabbit Breeders Association. Again Sherry Hines won Best of Breed in Polish and Dutch, and 1st Reserve in Show with the same Junior Black Dutch buck that caught the judge's eye on Saturday. Keeping with consistency, Jessica's Senior Blue Dutch doe again won Best of Breed and followed that win by being selected for the 2nd Reserve in Show.

Congratulations go to these two District 4 members for these exciting wins!

District 4 Member from Colorado
Honored with Prestigious ARBA Award

Rosie Scanlon of CO, was given the ARBA Distingushed Service Award at The Platte River Fanciers July 31st in Henderson, CO.

Rosie Scanlon, Denver, CO, was introduced to rabbits 30 years ago, when her 2 daughters joined 4-H. 19 years ago, she became a 4-H Rabbit Superintendent. During the first 11 years, the rabbit numbers grew very slowly. The Scanlons became members of the ARBA, Rocky Mountain Shows (RMRS), Platte River Rabbit Fanciers and many National Specialty Breed Clubs.

Over the next 11 years, Rosie became very involved with a number of rabbit-related organizations. She has or does hold many rabbit club titles. In addition, she is also a coach for the Colorado State Judging Team which participates at the ARBA National Conventions.

Rosie is a core individual in the rabbit and 4-H world. Without her support, guidance, and knowledge many peoples' lives would not be enhanced. She is always willing to help and assist with anyone who shares the rabbit habit. Due to all of Rosie's hard work and dedication to the rabbit hobby, she has earned the ARBA Distinguished Service Award. Also, earlier this year she received the Rocky Mountain High Show Outstanding Member Award. That award had not been handed out for several years prior.

Last Summer Show for Rabbits

DUNCAN - The Livestock Pavilion was filled to the brim with rabbit breeders as the Stephens County Rabbit Breeders Association played host to more than 1,200 rabbits Friday and Saturday at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center.

Association founder and president C.M. Carroll was surprised by the crowds that turned out for the last summer breeders show. The group has moved to a three show a year schedule, losing the summer show starting next year.

ARBA Judge, Robert Caldwell examines a Mini Rex at the SCRBA June 18th show."I had no idea how big the crowd would be today," Carroll said. "For how hot it is inside this building, there are a lot of people that turned out."

With the pavilion filled with approximately 1,200 rabbits and hundreds of attendees, the breeders had to make extra efforts to cool down their rabbits from the heat.

Susan Yeary set up multiple fans, arranged to cool the stacks of rabbit cages she brought in from Edinburg, Texas. She has participated in the summer show in the past couple of years and is sad to see the show disappear.

"C.M. puts on a great show and I love coming up to Oklahoma to visit with other rabbit enthusiasts," Yeary said. "I really enjoy this show and I was about to cry when I found out their not going to put one on next year."

Susan Yeary tries to make sure her rabbits are cool in the Livestock Pavillion while waiting for her breed classes to be called. This rabbit breeders show kicked off the summer season, Yeary said, with other shows not starting up until Labor Day or later in the season.

The judges for the show on average rate about 250 rabbits per day, as dictated by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, show volunteer Sue Monahon said.

"Each rabbit is judged by correct sex, how their toenails are clipped and no unwanted spots," Monahon said. "The judges look for the best example of breeds for body type and to help place them."

The next rabbit breeder's show will be Sept. 2 - 3 at the Fair and Expo Center.
